"Making Memories at the Fair"
"Making Memories at the Fair"
DATE: September 26, 2024
Friend —
Turkey legs. Milkshakes. Family memories.
Like many in our community, the Great Geauga County Fair is an annual fixture for our family.
As I look back on old photos — including our annual fair traditions of turkey legs and 4-H milkshakes — I am reminded of so many experiences as our twins grow older, one year at a time.
Over the years, the Brakey Family has enjoyed many turkey legs and 4-H milkshakes at the Great Geauga County Fair, all while building fond family memories.
If you regularly attend the fair, I bet you’ve also formed many fond memories.
This year was no different — with wonderful experiences along the way — except for one change…
… this was the first year my husband had to traverse the fair on a broken foot!
Carolyn with her husband, Matt, who refused to let a small thing like a broken foot interfere with his ability to enjoy the Great Geauga County Fair.
Matt claims he broke his foot wrestling a bear in the West Woods to save our family from imminent danger… but truth be told, he simply misjudged how many steps were left as he walked down our stairs in the dark.
Thankfully, Matt was a trooper on his motorized scooter.
He had to skip participation in the 4-H 5k race, but otherwise didn’t let his injury stop him from enjoying our family traditions at the fair and exploring the fairgrounds.
One of our favorite stops was the 4-H auction, in which I became the owner of three blue-ribbon, sandwich-themed chickens named Peanut, Butter, and Jelly.
Thank you to Kalyn Toot for raising such fine chickens and taking a picture with us after the auction to show off her work!
At the 4-H auction, Carolyn purchased three blue-ribbon, sandwich-themed chickens — Peanut, Butter, and Jelly — all raised by Kalyn Toot.
Whenever I wasn’t touring the fairgrounds, you could usually find me at the Geauga GOP tent, where I enjoyed meeting with many supporters —of all ages.
Thank you to everyone who wore “Carolyn Brakey for Geauga County Commissioner” t-shirts to raise visibility for our campaign — especially the adorable Carlson sisters, along with my own daughter!
Through a faith-based basketball league, our family met the Carlsons two years ago.
It has been wonderful to see how our paths and values have continued to intersect — and I appreciate their support at the fair.

Now that the fair is over, we look ahead to the November 5th General Election — now just 40 days away!
Taking every opportunity to meet with the voters, we are planning and preparing for two meet-and-greets in mid-October with two good friends who serve Geauga County in the Ohio Statehouse:
Representative Steve Demetriou (District 35), and
Representative Sarah Fowler Arthur (District 99)
Please join us for food, refreshments, and an opportunity to share your thoughts on the issues that matter most.
Whether you and I have met already on the campaign trail, or if I’ve yet to have the honor of greeting you in person, I hope to see you there.
Ohio State Representatives Sarah Fowler Arthur and Steve Demetriou will be joining Carolyn for meet-and-greets in mid-October — and you are invited!

Sarah, Steve, and I would greatly value your input at these meet-and-greets on pressing issues like:
Inflation eroding our paychecks,
Rising property taxes that risk pricing Geaugans out of their homes,
Bureaucrats undermining parental rights,
Democrats manipulating the Ohio Constitution to gerrymander legislative districts, and
Any other concerns you believe are important to our community.
Please come out and join us!
And if you’d like to go the extra mile, there are two ways you can help right now:
